The Scrumpy Hut is new in 2025, and the latest addition to the accommodation here on our working Herefordshire cider farm. Our largest property so far, it sleeps up to 5 plus an infant. It blends the quirkiness of The Cider Shack with the home comforts of Yarlington Dairy. An outdoor bath, wood burner, views of the distant mountains, and the Ty Gwyn cider bar all add to the appeal!

Welcome to The Scrumpy Hut

The Scrumpy Hut sits at the back of Penylan Farm near the Cider Shack, and enjoys a wonderful westerly sunset-facing vista.

Enter through French doors into the large kitchen-living room area. The doors and windows maximise the glorious, uninterrupted views across farmland towards the Skirrid, Sugar Loaf and the Black Mountains.

Doors lead off the living area into the hut’s two wings. In the one generous shower room and separate WC. Head the other way into large multi-use hallway (use it for storage or for the kids to chill out on bean bags) and two bedrooms.

There’s a double room, plus a twin room with and a bespoke mezzanine-style bunk. We can make the twin beds into a superking for a small additional cost. (See ‘Things to note’ below for more details.)

There isn’t a television, but you can enjoy a ‘cinema experience’ as we provide a projector and DVDs. (Of course, with those incredible views, a wood burner, some good company, and a Ty Gwyn cider or two, you’re unlikely to miss the telly!)

In addition to the wood burner, the Scrumpy Hut has central heating and plenty of hot water, so you’ll be cosy here at any time of the year.

Outside, you can enjoy a large private fenced garden comprising a generous deck, gravelled area, seating, hammock and a large cast iron bath (which is perfect for soaking up the views or chilling out under a starry night sky). Bliss!

What we provide

  • Private parking space for three cars (or four parked snugly!)

  • All bed linen, pillows and duvet

  • Soap, shower gel, shampoo, conditioner, towels, hairdryer
  • Tea, coffee and sugar

  • Enough wood for one or two fires

  • Air fryer, hob, fridge, toaster, kettle, pots and pans, crockery, glasses, cutlery and utensils

  • A range of books, toys and games

  • A travel cot and high-chair are available upon request

Things to note

  • The Scrumpy Hut isn’t suitable for wheelchairs as there are steps into the property
  • The bunk bed is for children aged 6 years and older, and has a weight limit of 80kg. There isn’t a safety gate on the ladder, but doors can be closed to stop little ones climbing
  • We can make the twin beds into a superking. A £10 surcharge applies (payable direct to us after booking)
  • The wood burner does not have a fire guard, so we advise not to use it if little ones are roaming free
  • You may wish to wear your bathers when enjoying the outdoor bath to spare the blushes of any farmers working in the neighbouring fields!

A big thank-you!

The Scrumpy Hut came to fruition thanks to funding provided by the UK Share Prosperity Fund through a Rural Tourism Grant from Herefordshire council. Without this vital investment, our plans would still be on the drawing board.

We had a wonderful family holiday at the scrumpy hut. You were so welcoming, and the kids absolutely loved playing with the dogs and humans! We all loved the bathtub, the fireplace, roasting marshmallows, swinging in the hammock and finding some peace.

One of my favourite places to visit, beautiful views, comfortable and peaceful nights sleep. The lodge has everything you want for time away from home. We love the outside bath and the convenience of the cider shop. I would stay every weekend.
